More than 60,000
poor people live in the rural mountainous region
of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. They have
limited access to primary health, dental or
ophthalmology care. Children have parasites, are
not immunized and do not receive medical or
dental checkups.
Most families do not have access to potable
water, and dysentery and diarrhea are prevalent
throughout the area. Morbidity and mortality
rates are amongst the highest in Peru.
Due to the rough, mountainous geography and
the poor condition of narrow paths and
unpaved roads, there are many vehicular
accidents, especially during the rainy
season. The nearest operating room is an
hour away. Association Pro Salud Calca (Association
Pro-Health Calca) has partnered with
Northwest Medical Teams of Portland, Oregon
to build a health clinic in Coya, Peru,
about 40 miles east of Cusco.
The Kausay Wasi Health Clinic provides basic
health care to poor families in the Sacred
Valley and especially to people living in
isolated communities. The Clinic treats
approximately 10,000 patients per year, and
US visiting medical teams perform
approximately 300 operations free of charge
in specialties such as ears, nose and throat,
facial reconstruction, cataract, orthopedic
surgeries for children, and gynecological
surgeries for women.
The Kausay Wasi Health Clinic has two
operating rooms, four consultation rooms,
dental and gynecological care, a lab,
pharmacy, an admissions and records room,
and a birthing center.
